The State Netball Hockey Centre is set for some fireworks on Saturday 7th August, as teams prepare for the 2010 Holden Cruze Cup Grand Finals.
In this week’s hard fought Preliminary Finals, three more teams earnt their place in the Grand Final, setting up some thrilling contests.
In the Championship Division, Monash University Central blew North East Blaze out of the water, 66-39. Despite beating Monash twice during the season, a shell-shocked Blaze outfit could only watch as the Centrals flew out of the blocks and established an intimidating lead early in the match. Monash now meet traditional rivals Hume City Falcons in next Saturday’s Grand Final for an ultimate test of skills and wills in what is sure to be a classic match.
In Division 1, the Southern Saints rubbed salt into the wound of the Hume City Falcons, who were still smarting from their 2009 last minute Grand Final loss against the same team. Again, the Saints pulled out all the stops to steal the game from under Hume’s nose, 35-34. The Saints now move forward to take on Boroondara Genesis in the Grand Final.
In the 19 & Under Division, the Southern Saints knocked out the determined Monash University Centrals, winning their way through to a Grand Final against reigning champions the Hume City Falcons. Though Monash went into the game as favourites, the Southern Saints stayed cool and toppled the second placed Monash when it counted, 40-38.
