Familiar faces fight for finals glory - 22/7/2010
The 2010 Holden Cruze Cup finals have kicked off at the State Netball Hockey Centre, with the Semi Finals producing some upsets and setting up a thrilling Preliminary Finals week.
In the Championship Division, favourites Hume City Falcons (52) took out the Major Semi Final against traditional rivals Monash University Central (44) and will go straight into the Grand Final hoping to win their second straight Holden Cruze Cup title. In the meantime, Monash will play North East Blaze in next week’s Preliminary Final as Blaze (55) took care of the Southern Saints (46) in the Minor Semi. The Monash/Blaze game is set to be another thrilling contest, as the two teams fight it out for a chance to take on the Falcons. In 2010, Monash University Central and North East Blaze have gone head to head twice, with Blaze running out winners by two goals the first time, and one goal the second time.
Division 1 was not without its upsets, with Boroondara Genesis 40, pipping favourites Hume City Falcons, 38 in a close match. The Falcons will take on the Southern Saints next week for a chance to play in the Grand Final after the Saints (43), beat Monash University Central (40). Hume will be looking to make up for last year’s heartbreaking Division 1 Grand Final loss to the Saints who made a scintillating last minute comeback to stop the Falcons from taking the 2009 Grand Final hattrick.
In the 19/U Division Major Semi Final, ladder leaders Hume City Falcons (38) defeated second place Monash University Central (33) in a hard fought contest. While the Falcons take a week off to prepare for the Grand Final, Monash will take on the Southern Saints next week. The Saints (48) upset VU Western Lightning (44) in the Minor Semi, exacting revenge on the Lightning who had beaten the Saints twice this season.
